We’re checking in on the current state of shoe trends and doing a deeper dive into the top styles for 2018…
Kitten heels dominate the current trends for shoes, with three out of the top five terms with the highest search growth to LY being some variation of the kitten heel. Kitten heels as a style are nothing new, in fact, they’re historically often shunned as the outcast of the heel varieties. Yet, in recent seasons, designers have sent them down the runways, notably Spring/Summer 2017 with Vetements, Dior, J.W. Anderson, Marni, Celine, and Mansur Gavriel sparking renewed interest and acceptance of the style. Street style stars have since been spotted dorning the trend, and social buzz has fueled consumer adoption, with top social posts for kitten heels coming from influencers and brands like Lizzy (What Would Lizzy Do?), Bottega Veneta, Moda Operandi, and Nina Ricci
Top retailers for kitten heels include Asos, Amazon, Net-a-Porter, Nordstrom, and MatchesFashion with 56% of kitten heel assortment selling above $100, and an AUR of $302.91, indicating kitten heels are still most prominent within the luxury sector and not yet adopted by the mass market. 60% of kitten heel product assortment is selling at full price, further indicating this is a healthy trend and has yet to fully takeoff within the fast fashion segment.
While the kitten heel made a comeback in the 2017 season, we’re now looking to 2018 and seeing its variations begin to take shape, namely kitten heel booties, kitten heel mules, and kitten heel boots, all within the top five shoe trends of the moment with some of the highest search growth to LY, up 218%, 148%, 77%, respectively.
While both kitten heel booties and kitten heel boots have rather robust search volume, both more than 6,000 searches, kitten heel mules, while up more than 150% in search growth to LY, are just emerging with less than 1,000 in search volume, indicating this is a nascent trend currently reserved for early adopters. With kitten heels regaining popularity, and the rise of the mule style since at least 2015 thanks to Maryam Nassir Zadeh and the emergence of Gucci’s fur lined slipper slides, it’s no surprise kitten heel mules are finding their way to the trend spotlight.Top colors for kitten heel mules are black, taupe/brown, blue, and red. Tellingly, 75% of the kitten heel mules pricing segment falls above $100, with an AUR of $402.38, indicating dominance in the luxury segment. Conversely, kitten heel boots and kitten heel booties dominate the contemporary and mass market, with 57% and 58% of their product assortment priced below $100, respectively.

Interestingly, however, searches for booties peak YOY in November, then sharply drop off, only to pick back up at the beginning of summer, around June. Kitten heel booties defy this trend with search growth continuing to grow past the typical November drop off. Top colors for kitten heel booties are black, blue, gray/white, brown/taupe, and red.
